UX Designer / UI Lead Designer: Research, Analysis, User Test, Final Prototype, Visual Presentation

Energy consumption is one of the main social concerns that children aren't fully aware of because there's a lack of resources and interest around it and will reflect on their own lives further on.
Therefore, a way to teach kids about energy in an accessible and fun way will bring their attention to the topic and have a more sustainable future.

01
General Research
We interviewed parents and kids around us and received the following feedback

"My kids always forget to turn off the light when leaving the area and forget to close the fridge door after using it at home. Our home is not energy efficient"
Thelma
" I'm concerned that if my children don't start learning about energy and understand the consequences of how we consume it, they will face a much bigger crisis when they grow up than the one we're currently living in."
Stanly
"I am not familiar with the knowledge related to energy and energy consumption. The school also did not teach my kids about energy and saving energy."
Lisa

"Most of the time I don't understand why I have to listen to my parents all the time and do everything they say at home like turning the TV off if I'm not watching it"
- Olivia
"I get angry sometimes when I don't understand things and I'm just being ordered around the house, and then get grounded for being angry and Mom&Dad say I can't play video games anymore."
- Peter

Market Research

From our research, we did not find a direct way/educational tool for kids to learn what is energy and how to save them. But we analyzed these popular products and find inspiration for our own product.
User Persona & User Journey Map
Jason 6 years old
1st grader / Play games, some sports, play with family&friends
Jason dislikes being ordered around and not really understanding the why of many of those things he has to do at home and in school.
Needs:
1. A learning tool that would teach children at a young age, about household chores and the relationship with the environment.
2. A fun and gamified product that would allow him to learn in a more enjoyable manner.
3. Other activities that would promote Jason to combine games and outdoors.

Goal: A game and educational app that teaches young children about the concept of energy in a fun and interactive way.

Virtual Pet Home
Play inside the pet's virtual home where the avatar can interact with different home appliances around the space which offer friendly and easy lessons about the energy source the appliance is using.

Mini-Games
Every mini-game has a specific learning goal around the subject of energy and there are different levels of complexity within the mini-games. Players can play while learning.
Pet Shop
The shop will contain a wide variety of items that the player can buy with their coins for customizing their pet.

Magic Pictures
With Augmented Reality technology integrated, the player can transport their personal pet into their real home by using their device's camera and taking photos of their virtual pet in a real-world scenario.
